C2REST Nigeria Study Team Pays Courtesy Visit to Covenant University

A delegation from the Global Health Research Initiative, C2REST, recently paid a courtesy visit to the management of Covenant University to strengthen collaborative ties and explore ways to contribute to societal wellbeing.

The team, led by Dr. Davies Adeloye, an Associate Professor at the University of East London, expressed delight at returning to Covenant University, where he had previously served as an adjunct lecturer. Sharing a sense of nostalgia, Dr. Adeloye reflected on his earlier time at the institution and the relationships that have grown since then.

Speaking on the purpose of the visit, Dr. Adeloye explained that C2REST’s work focuses on tackling respiratory diseases and pollution-related health challenges in Nigeria, with key projects based in Alimosho Local Government Area and Ota, home to Covenant University. The visit, he said, was part of a two-fold mission: providing medical assistance to indigent communities and pursuing extensive research collaborations with the University’s scholars.

He revealed that the team had recently secured a grant to support their work and looked forward to deepening research partnerships, particularly with Dr. Alex Iseolorunkanmi, Covenant University’s Chief Medical Officer, with whom he has co-authored several high-impact publications. Dr. Adeloye praised Dr. Iseolorunkanmi for his continued support since their first collaboration years ago.

In his remarks, Dr. Iseolorunkanmi welcomed his former colleague, recalling their shared history as undergraduates at the University of Ilorin and later as collaborators at Covenant University. He reaffirmed his commitment to ongoing joint research efforts for the benefit of society.

Professor Lanre Amodu, Deputy Vice-Chancellor, noted that Covenant University remains committed to initiatives that advance human welfare, assuring the visitors of a productive partnership.

In his address, Professor Timothy Anake, Vice-Chancellor, humorously asked Dr. Adeloye when exactly he left the University after his previous engagement. He then briefed the team on Covenant University’s major research programmes, including the African Centre of Excellence (CAPIC-ACE), which focuses on prostate cancer, malaria, and other health concerns. He also highlighted research clusters in the Department of Chemistry working on toxicity studies, noting the potential for interdisciplinary collaboration.

According to Professor Anake, “Value begets more value, and this visit will not only raise the visibility of all participants but also contribute to impactful research outcomes that will benefit the nation and address the Sustainable Development Goal on Good health and well-being (SDG 3).’’ He assured the C2REST team of the University’s full support to ensure fruitful results from the collaboration.

The meeting concluded with the Vice-Chancellor wishing the team a pleasant and productive stay at Covenant University.
