New College of Law to Address Critical Gaps and Restore Dignity to Nigeria’s Legal Profession – Chancellor, underscoring its importance in advancing Nigeria’s legal education and professional standards.

The Chancellor of Covenant University, Dr. David Oyedepo, has declared the inauguration of the College of Law, a strategic move to address a pressing need in Nigeria’s legal and jurisprudential landscape.

The groundbreaking ceremony for the College of Law signifies Covenant University’s dedication to addressing legal education gaps and elevating Nigeria’s legal standards, inspiring pride and confidence among stakeholders.

Recalling the University’s rapid development since its licensing on February 12, 2002, Dr Oyedepo reflected on its transformation from what critics once described as a “glorified secondary school” into a leading institution in Nigeria. He noted that Covenant University continues to rank highly, including being named Nigeria’s top institution in the recent QS Sustainability Rankings, while its graduates remain among the most employable in the country.

“As we open this new chapter, we do so with confidence, because God has always gone ahead of us,” he said, adding that construction of the College of Law will commence immediately after the groundbreaking ceremony on February 12, 2026. He also disclosed that the groundbreaking ceremony for the College of Medicine will take place later in the month.

In her remarks, the Pro-Chancellor, Pastor (Mrs.) Faith Oyedepo described the event as a fulfilment of the University’s declared year of “Open Doors.” She noted the significance of the date, observing that February 12 also marks the anniversary of Covenant University’s approval in 2002.

Secretary of the Board of Regents of the institution, Barrister Banji Baruwa, described the development as divinely appointed, expressing optimism that the College would become one of the best in Nigeria and beyond.

The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Timothy Anake, described the new College as the beginning of a transformative era in legal education. He expressed confidence that it would raise a new generation of exceptional legal practitioners and thanked the Chancellor and Board of Regents for their visionary leadership.

The ceremony marks another milestone in the University’s ongoing expansion and commitment to academic excellence and leadership development.
