NUC Commends Covenant University’s Biochemistry Department, Others, During Accreditation Visit

Delegations from the National Universities Commission (NUC) were on campus recently, for the accreditation of the Department of Biochemistry, Biological Sciences and Building Technology, all in the College of Science and Technology, Covenant University.

The accreditation team for the Department of Biochemistry, was led by Professor Matthew Uwhonda Wegwu, President of the Nigerian Association of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and a Professor at the University of Port Harcourt, and also included Professor Sanusi Hassan Wara and Mr. Arome Joseph. Upon arrival, the team paid a courtesy visit to the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Timothy Anake, who warmly welcomed them to the University.

Speaking on the purpose of the visit, Professor Wegwu expressed his delight at leading the NUC team to Covenant University, describing the institution as a trailblazer in the Nigerian higher education landscape. He commended the University’s culture of excellence and innovation, noting that Covenant continues to set benchmarks for other institutions to follow.

He further stated that the accreditation exercise would not only strengthen the Department of Biochemistry but also help reaffirm the University’s commitment to global academic standards. Professor Wegwu also invited members of the department to participate actively in the forthcoming Annual General Conference of the Nigerian Association of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, scheduled to hold in Abuja in the coming weeks.

Professor Wegwu further lauded the confidence and brilliance of the students the team interacted with, noting that their comportment and responses reflected the University’s strong academic and ethical foundation.

The team leads of both the Biological Sciences Department, Professor Bamidele J. Akinyele and the Building Technology Programme, Professor Olu Ola Ogunsote, expressed great pleasure at the level of interactions they have had during their visit in Covenant University. They commended the University Management, faculty, staff, and students for their professionalism, discipline, and dedication. They described the Covenant environment as serene, inspiring, and conducive for academic excellence, and applauded the warmth and hospitality extended to them throughout their visit.

In his closing remarks, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Timothy Anake, appreciated the NUC team for their diligence and thoroughness during the exercise. He noted that accreditation visits serve as valuable peer-review mechanisms that help universities identify areas for growth while sharing best practices that enhance institutional performance.

He further thanked the NUC for sustaining such quality assurance processes and prayed for journey mercies for the visiting team as they returned to their respective destinations.

Also at the meeting were the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Professor Lanre Amodu; the Registrar, Mr. Emmanuel Igban and other members of the University Management.
